Reverse Hipster - Monica Garthwaite

"Hipster" is a term that has many different definitions and images that go along with it. The word hipster can be referring to a style, person, action, or idea. Urban dictionary describes hipster as "A subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter" (Urban Dictionary: Hipsters). Being hipster is also associated with a care-free attitude that embraces individuality.

Some examples that my classmates used are Mumford and Sons and Adele because of their unique and fresh styles. These artists fit the mold for how society views hipsters by their styles. But the ironic thing is, they are both very popular artists. Many current artists that are popular can be defined as "hipster" or at least having a hipster-like style. Being hipster is becoming more and more popular.

So what does that mean? Because if embracing differences is becoming popular, then those "differences" become less different if that's what everyone is doing. So in order to actually be a hipster...you would have to be mainstream...because no one is doing that anymore.

Urban Dictionary describes a mainstream person as "Being what society thinks you should be, and look like" (Urban Dictionary: Mainstream). An example of a mainstream artist could be Justin Bieber because his work is vary familiar and heard often on the radio.

When it comes around to it, there is no technical way to ever be "hipster" it is viewed as more of a lifestyle than a personality label. As for music, we will never know of anything that is hipster because once we do, it won't be hipster anymore.
